We had an amazing time on this tour. The host Thilanka was extremely knowledgeable and we had a great time with him. We visited a gem market which was really interesting to see the process of how rough gems are traded. We also met with his friend Kushan who knew so much about the gem industry. He showed us his collection with all the different gems that are produced in Sri Lanka. We saw how stones go from the mines to cutting and polishing into the finished product. We also visited an amazing gem museum which was wonderful to see. The driving was also really nicely planned with a great local breakfast spot on the way and amazing scenery and a temple on the way back. I’d highly recommend this tour

Had an amazing time with Thilanka! He is a very good tour guide with a lot of passion for his work. The tour itself is amazing and you get to see all aspects of the business from seeing the stones, going to the market and see the process in the mines. You also meet Kushan who is an expert in the gemstone business and he shows you all the different stones there are to find in Ratnapura. Thilanka is a unique guide who comes armed with knowledge and a love for what he does. He enjoys people which is why he abandoned a career in banking so he could meet people and his wife and he like to globe trot. He even brings hand-picked books from his extensive library to add to information you might want about the sites on the agenda. Mine was tailored for what I wanted to see: architecture and design as well as a culinary off-the-beaten-path experience. It was truly pleasant riding with him in his car and hearing the stories he likes to tell. He completely customized a trip just for me without much input for me but it felt as if I had asked for it all! If you manage to book him, consider yourself lucky! Flawless English. And he is mad about birds.

This tour reminded me why I love traveling, not just because of the incredible places you get to see, but because of the wonderful people you meet along the way. Although it’s listed as a birdwatching tour, it’s much more than that. His knowledge is impressive, but what stood out even more was his ability to show Sri Lanka through the eyes of both a local and a fellow traveler, giving a 360-degree perspective of his country. Throughout the tour, I felt well informed and cared for. He came prepared with binoculars, water, natural mosquito repellent and everything you might need for an adventure in the nature. This is our second time during a Colombo tour with Thilanka – he was wonderfully flexible in tailoring it to our range of interests and availability. We continue to be struck by how patient and kind a guide he is – and just how much knowledge and deep passion he holds for his subject matter. During our tour Thilanka demonstrated a nuanced understanding of Colombo’s history and its various attractions, much of which we were personally unaware of despite having grown up in the country. Apart from showing us Colombo itself, Thilanka showed us all the ways in which Colombo is a wonderful microcosm of Sri Lanka, from culture to nature – and how much we can experience in a short time, within a relatively short distance. A definite highlight of our tour was when Thilanka took us on a bird watching tour in Colombo itself, and readily shared all his knowledge and passion with us. We definitely recommend this tour for foreigners and locals alike!

Tiranga’s tour was very enjoyable and exciting. He prepared breakfast for us and picked us up at 4:00 in Negombo. He drove for two hours to make sure we arrived when it was light out. He lent us binoculars as we were beginners at bird watching. He taught us exactly how to find birds. We don’t speak English, but we had almost no problems communicating. He must have been tired and sleepy, but he sent us photos and a list of the creatures we were able to observe that day. We appreciate it.
